INCIDENT PREPAREDNESS & MANAGEMENT
In the event of a marine emergency occurring, often resulting in concerns for safety of life and marine pollution, it is essential that all role players are ready to respond timeously by accessing and mobilizing relevant resources.
The South African Incident Management Organisation (IMOrg), under the South African Department of Transport, plays a critical role in coordinating preparedness and response, utilising the internationally recognised Incident Management System (IMS).
From the 4th to the 7th of November the IMOrg hosted an IMS national training course and the 3rd Joint Industry Government Oil Spill Response Exercise in Cape Town. AMSOL sponsored the exercise which took place on the 6th and 7th of November – and was focused on preparing stakeholders should an incident occur, utilising scenario and contingency planning.
The 4-day programme, compiled by the IMOrg, Department of Transport, Department of Environment, Forestry & Fisheries, South African Maritime Safety Authority as well as other relevant stakeholders, ensures that in South Africa we are aligned to international best practice in incident management by proactively preparing to manage marine pollution incidents ensuring that the appropriate resources and stakeholders are mobilised quickly and decisions are made timeously. AMSOL is a member of the International Salvage Union and also operates the standby tug ‘SA Amandla’ – with an experienced team of marine emergency responders on call and ready to provide support.
