MARINE FUEL DELIVERY CAPACITY EXPANDS
With the expansion of marine services into tanker operations defined as a strategic goal for AMSOL five years ago, progress made to date now sees the company operating a fleet of four product tankers and two bunker barges; delivering fuel safely to vessels in port and offshore for clients in the Energy sector. Ship-to-ship (STS) transfers of petroleum products, chemicals, and gas are also conducted at ports including Richards Bay, Ngqura, Cape Town, and offshore Angola. Safety, environmental protection, and compliance with international standards remain at the heart of AMSOL’s operations, ensuring risk-managed solutions for every delivery, to high international standards.
The growth of this business has been a key focus for Chief Operating Officer Graham Dreyden and the Fuel Logistics & Transportation team.
“With clients such as BP, Shell, Engen, Astron Energy, and Vitol, our ability to provide safe, compliant, and reliable services that meet international standards is essential,” notes Graham.
AMSOL’s South African-owned and flagged tanker fleet includes the ‘Isiqalo’, ‘Uhambo’, and ‘Ilitha’ and represents a strategic investment of R450 million over the past five years. This highlights the company’s long-term commitment to growing South Africa’s maritime sector while consistently meeting stringent international standards. The tanker fleet also reflects AMSOL’s focus on building local capability, expanding the pool of South African tanker-endorsed seafarers, and ensuring a sustainable talent pipeline for the future of the industry.
The ‘Isiqalo’ currently delivers marine fuel to vessels calling at the Port of Durban; the busiest port in sub-Saharan Africa. In September 2024, AMSOL acquired the ‘Uhambo’, which now delivers locally refined marine fuel in Algoa Bay. The tanker ‘Ilitha’ is now also based in Gqeberha and flagged in South Africa, reinforcing AMSOL’s ongoing commitment to sustainable, locally-driven growth in South Africa’s maritime and energy sectors.
The addition of ‘Uhambo’ and ‘Ilitha’ strengthens AMSOL’s ability to meet the fuel logistics and transportation requirements of its clients and demonstrates the company’s commitment the development of skilled South African seafarers. With a proven track record in risk-managed fuel transfers, AMSOL continues to deliver in-port bunker delivery, offshore bunkering, ship-to-ship fuel transfers, and offshore terminal management.
