RESOURCING MARITIME LEARNERS

As a leading employer of South African seafarers, AMSOL strengthens the maritime talent pipeline through a number of initiatives including its active bursary programme and SAMSA accredited Cadet Training Scheme. By participating in secondary level maritime education initiatives as well as career awareness programmes, strategic partnerships with industry and non-profit organisations result in real impact.

As 2026 began, AMSOL partnered with Ongoti Maritime Education & Training Consultancy, led by founder, educator and author Aubrey Nhlanhla Sosibo. An experienced maritime educator, Mr Sosibo identified that maritime calculations often present challenges for learners. In response, he authored ‘Maritime Economics in a Nutshell: A ‘Well’ of Maritime Calculations’; a learner’s workbook and educator’s guide designed to strengthen learners’ understanding of maritime-related calculations at secondary school level.

The workbook consolidates all Grade 10, 11 and 12 calculation content into a single, comprehensive resource. It includes hundreds of exam-style practice questions, clear step-by-step worked examples, and a structured progression in difficulty to support progressive learning. The content is fully aligned with the national CAPS curriculum, ensuring relevance and consistency with classroom teaching.

With AMSOL’s support, the workbooks were distributed at the start of the 2026 academic year. Approximately 400 learners across six schools in Gqeberha and Port Alfred received copies. The handover visits were conducted by Mr Sosibo, AMSOL Communications Officer Lizeka Mathabeni, and the Eastern Cape Provincial Coordinator for Maritime Studies, Luvoyo Nkani, representing the Eastern Cape Department of Education.
