FUELING THE SA MARITIME SECTOR: AMSOL CELEBRATES THE ‘UHAMBO’
This week, AMSOL celebrated a significant milestone together with stakeholders by officially renaming the latest addition to the fleet, ‘Uhambo’ — meaning ‘The Journey’. The event, which took place in Durban, highlighted AMSOL’s commitment to supporting the fuel logistics and transportation market whilst advancing South Africa’s maritime capabilities.
The renaming ceremony was attended by industry leaders, government representatives, and AMSOL employees, creating a sense of collective celebration. The vessel was officially renamed by TNPA Acting Management Executive for the Eastern Region Ms. Mpumi Dweba-Kwetana, whilst Deputy Director General of the Department of Transport, Mr. Mthunzi Madiya, delivered the Keynote Address. Mr. Madiya highlighted how the acquisition contributes to the growth of the local maritime economy and its alignment with the objectives of the South African Comprehensive Maritime Transport Policy, which aims to further unlock economic potential in the sector.
“Seafarer development, training and job opportunities in the tanker endorsed qualifications framework is a step in the right direction towards sustainability, regional cooperation and ensuring global competitiveness”, noted Mr. Madiya.
The ‘Uhambo’, now registered and flagged in South Africa, enhances AMSOL’s capacity to safely transport a variety of fuel grades for the local market. AMSOL’s Chief Executive Officer, Dan Ngakane emphasized the strategic importance of the acquisition, noting:
“This addition demonstrates our commitment to industry standards and our dedication to empowering people by developing a pool of competent South African seafarers for the fuel logistics sector.”
With a fleet of 19 vessels, including three product tankers and two bunker barges, AMSOL adheres to international safety and environmental standards. The acquisition of the ‘Uhambo’ reinforces the company’s focus on people, partnerships, and purpose, driving future growth in tanker operations.
AMSOL’s ongoing investment in South Africa’s maritime sector also reflects its dedication to sustainable growth, local economic development, and talent empowerment — ensuring its role as a trusted partner in the region’s fuel logistics and transportation network. With the ‘Uhambo’ now part of its fleet, AMSOL is prepared to continue leading the way in sustainable and strategic marine solutions, ensuring a lasting impact on South Africa’s energy and maritime sectors.
